Finding Help in the Supply Chain
By John Brandt
An improving economy has prompted many manufacturers to invest in their operations and their workforces to meet surging demand. Yet some are finding that they can’t invest fast enough. Can suppliers help you fill those gaps?
Maybe. The answer depends on the strength and nature of the relationships a company or plant has developed with suppliers. According to the 2011 MPI Manufacturing Study, approximately half of plants have certified major suppliers to their standards and share forecasts with them, two best practices that help synchronize supplier efforts. But only one-third of plants have a plan to manage those suppliers or collaboratively design with customers.
