Modems
Modems or modulators/demodulators are used in communication between computers and networks. They are used to send and receive data and signals over telephone lines, network cables, local area networks, and wide area networks, and to allow computers to be connected to the Internet and so on. They are hardware devices or software programs that encode digital signals and transmit them and their counterparts. In the receiving location, they decode the signals and feed them to the computer or other devices.
There are many types of modems, like IC modems that connect to the Internet through telephone. Fiber-optic modems send and receive high volumes of data is digital signal processing devices. Wireless modems are used in wireless devices like mobiles, walkie-talkies and other such devices. They need to be very lightweight, consume very little power and be radiation-free.
Radio modems connect to serial ports like RS 422, and RS 232 and act as radio frequency to send and receive serial data with compatible modems. Modems are used for narrow- and broadband connections and have a limit on the data they can send per second, like 256 Kb per second and so on.
